Watercolor landscape, Hudson River area, New York State, by William C. Craig (Irish-American 1829-1875), signed and dated 1870. Size 14″ x 10″ in good condition, mounted in a 20th cent. glazed frame, 20″x 16″. Born in Dublin, Ireland, William Craig achieved recognition as a watercolorist in his native country before moving to New York in 1863 at the age of 34. In 1866 he became one of the founding members of the American Watercolor Society along with Samuel Colman and William Hart. The artist painted mainly landscape views, especially throughout upstate New York in the style of the Hudson River School painters. He also took a trip to Kentucky and Ohio in 1865. In his mid forties, Craig died tragically by drowning whilst swimming Lake George, New York.
